About Us

About Us

At Avink, McCowen, & Secord Funeral Homes and Cremation Society we are proud to trace our roots back to the early 1920’s. Just like previous generations we strive every day to exceed the needs and expectations of the families and communities we serve.

We are an independently owned and operated group of funeral homes who have a strong desire to provide meaningful ways to honor a life lived. Our focus is on writing life stories that will be passed down from generation to generation as well as shared with co-workers, friends, and family. Secondly, we are committed to providing worthwhile ways for people to express themselves and share lives lived through the internet, printed materials, video, and at funerals and memorial services.

Together, the story and the memories sustain the lives of loved ones, enriching family and friends while fostering an appreciation of life and the connections we all have, one to another. Our promise is to give people the support and tools they need to preserve memories and celebrate lives.

H. John Avink IV and wife Elizabeth Avink moved to Schoolcraft in June of 1977 to manage the Truesdale-Robertson Funeral Home.  Then on April 1, 1980 they bought the Funeral Home in Schoolcraft from Truedsale Chapels and changed the name to Robertson Avink Funeral Home.  Later they changed the name to Avink Funeral Home.  In Feb. of 1985 John and Liz started the Cremation Society of Michigan.  Which was later changed the name to Avink Funeral Home Cremation Society.

Then on March 15, 2019, Steve McCowen and Tim Secord purchased the business, and changed it to the present name Avink, McCowen & Secord Funeral Home & Cremation Society. Steve and Tim are committed to caring for the client families much like John and Liz Avink. They plan to also be active members of the Schoolcraft community. Their objective is to provide the Schoolcraft community a local funeral home presence and offer affordable burial and cremation services for all of Southwest Michigan to stay true to the roots that the Avinks started.
