Randy Charles Hoppenworth

Randy Charles Hoppenworth, 56, of Kalamazoo Michigan passed away suddenly of a brain aneurism Friday, August 25, 2017. He was a loving son, husband, father, and friend to many and will be greatly missed. Randy was born August 19, 1961, at Oakland Hospital in Dearborn, Michigan to Charles Hoppenworth and Helen (Williams) Hoppenworth. He grew up in Southgate Michigan and attended George G. Schafer High School, graduating in 1979. He was a life-long learner and received dual bachelor degrees in advertising and telecommunications from Michigan State University and later achieved an M.S. in organizational management from Spring Arbor. He received numerous awards in customer service and project management throughout his career. He met his wife Annette (Hafner) at Michigan State; they were married August 22, 1987. They celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary camping as a family just days before his death. They have two children, Sarah Hoppenworth, 25, and Joshua Hoppenworth, 23, and their dog Rosie. Randy loved sports and played both football and baseball in high school, as well as intramural in college. He coached both children at Westwood Little League, where he was on the board and president for many years. Randy coached Sarah and Josh's travel ball teams and he treasured his weekends with them. He loved watching them play and was thrilled when his son started coaching Little League this summer. The family loved camping and fishing. They participated in the YMCA Indian Guides program, camping as a family in all four seasons. He loved the companionship of the other fathers and their children and spent hours carving derby cars and snow snakes with his children. The family tent camped when the children were little and had a trailer at Canadian Lakes for many years. They had purchased an RV recently to use at MSU football games, and camped in it for the first time the week of his death at Yankee Springs, where they had camped with the Indian Guides program. Randy was active in Scouting with his son Joshua, who earned his Eagle award. Randy received his Wood Badge leadership award through the scout program and loved watching wilderness survival shows; he longed to return to the Canadian Rockies where he hiked in college. He worked as a manager at Kinko's in Kalamazoo, Kellogg's in B.C., and as a management contractor for Battelle at the Federal Center in Battle Creek. He was a Sr. Associate, Order Management OTC for Kellogg's in Grand Rapids at the time of his death. Randy attended discipleship classes at Westwood United Methodist Church, where the couple led a middle school dinner ministry. The couple currently attended Resurgence in Otsego, Michigan. He is survived by his wife Annette Hoppenworth (Hafner), children Sarah Hoppenworth (Austin Tokarski) and Joshua Hoppenworth (Kari Keagle), his parents Charles and Helen Hoppenworth, his brother and sister-in-law Marty and Wendy, nephews Kyle and Ryan Hoppenworth, and many uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Frank and Lula Williams and Martin and Grace Hoppenworth, uncles Robert Williams, Frank Jr. Williams, Paul Williams, and aunt Iva Bloomfield. A Celebration of Life will take place Saturday, September 2, at 2:00 p.m. at Resurgence Church, 315 Watson Road, Otsego, Michigan, 49078. Dinner will follow the service. In lieu of floral arrangements the family would prefer plants. Memorial contributions can be made to Westwood Little League and Michigan State University Athletics. Checks may be sent to Avink Funeral Home Cremation Society at P. O. Box 417 129 S. Grand, Schoolcraft, MI 49087. Randy will be remembered for his sense of humor and his love and commitment to his family.
